The textiles and apparel industry in India is thriving across its entire value chain, from fibre to apparel. With a diverse range of products, including traditional handloom, handicrafts, wool, silk, and organized textile industry segments, the industry is highly segmented. As a capital-intensive industry, the organized textile sector is characterized by mass production, spinning, weaving, processing, and apparel manufacturing.

The textile industry is the largest employment generator in India, creating jobs and opportunities for ancillary sectors. It accounts for nearly three-quarters of the country’s total fibre consumption, with cotton being the dominant fibre. India is renowned for its significant production capacity in cotton and jute garments globally. However, the industry faces stiff competition from China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Vietnam in the global market.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian textile industry has demonstrated resilience and recovery. The industry encompasses not only large textile mills and high-end garment boutiques but also self-employed artisans from rural areas, who are supported through government schemes like MGNREGA and NGOs.
